What to bring
It's a full day outdoors on a river boat, often in fall and winter weather, so plan accordingly:
- Clothing: dress in layers — synthetic or wool base layers, not cotton, which stays wet and cold. A rain jacket and rain pants are worth having even on a forecast-clear day. Add a warm hat and a spare pair of gloves.
- Footwear: insulated, waterproof boots. Your feet will be the coldest part of you if they get wet.
- Lunch: there's no refrigeration on the boat, so bring food that travels well at room temperature — sandwiches, jerky, trail mix, granola bars, hard cheese, and fruit all hold up fine. A thermos of something hot is a nice touch in cold weather.
- Water: bring your own bottle. It's easy to forget to hydrate on a cold day, but you'll be out for hours.
- A dry bag or extra layer to change into is a good idea if you tend to run cold or wet.
